A Man Called Ove

3。5/5 In this series, the author has cast himself as one of the characters and in this book #3 he has woven a story around a litfest on an island。 Anthony Horowitz writes smart whodunnits but I dont think I was fully convinced by this one。 Lets see what others think of it !

I always look forward to new releases in this series and this one certainly did not disappoint! Thanks to the publisher, Century, for providing a copy of this novel on which I wrote an honest review。 。。。more

Anthony Horowitz has written a book about police consultant Daniel Hawthorne。 He followed Hawthorne around on a murder case, taking notes, and put it all together into a book he’s calling The Word is Murder。 His publisher signed him to a 3-book deal, and now that the first one is getting close to its publication day, his publishers want to talk to him and Hawthorne about publicity。 There is a literary festival coming up in Alderney, in the Channel Islands。 It’s a new festival, so they would be s Anthony Horowitz has written a book about police consultant Daniel Hawthorne。 He followed Hawthorne around on a murder case, taking notes, and put it all together into a book he’s calling The Word is Murder。 His publisher signed him to a 3-book deal, and now that the first one is getting close to its publication day, his publishers want to talk to him and Hawthorne about publicity。 There is a literary festival coming up in Alderney, in the Channel Islands。 It’s a new festival, so they would be some of the first authors to participate。 Although they won’t yet have any actual books to sell yet, they agree to go。 The other authors who will be at the festival are a television cook selling his latest cookbook, a French poet who writes in a little-used French dialect, a blind psychic, a children’s writer, and Alderney’s own history writer, talking about the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II。 Anthony is expecting a fairly quiet weekend, some talks, a reading at the library by the children’s author, and a party featuring the food of chef Marc Bellamy, the television cook who specializes in old-school pub comfort food。 What they don’t expect is to turn up on the island while it’s experiencing a political battle。 Neighbors are fighting with neighbors about whether or not to allow an electric company to build power lines across the island to connect France and the UK。 Many on Alderney don’t want their island to be overrun with electric equipment; they want their lovely island preserved as it is。 But others want the money that the agreement would bring。 The islanders had been arguing for weeks about it。 But the lit festival’s organizer downplays the power drama and tries to get them to focus on spreading the joy of books and reading。 And for a day or so, things go as planned。 Authors hold question and answer sessions, readings, and interact with festival goers。 But then, at the party catered by the television chef, held at the mansion of online casino millionaire Charles le Mesurier。 As a man who stands to make a lot of money from the power deal, he’s not made a lot of fans from the locals。 While he has lots of money from his online casinos, a beautiful wife, and a lovely home, his actions at the party also show him to be a bully, a womanizer, and a businessman with questionable connections。 But no one expected him to end up murdered。 With Hawthorne on the scene, the local police ask him for help in solving the murder, but e has another agenda for his time on Alderney as well。 But will he be able to solve the crime, and will Horowitz be able to get his third contracted book out of it? A Line to Kill is the third installment of books with master investigator Hawthorne and writer Horowitz。 A modern day Sherlock Holmes and Watson, these two may not like each other all the time, but they can still solve all the mysteries and write it all up in crackerjack style。 I am a big fan of these novels。 I love how adroit Hawthorne is at reading a room and how slow Anthony is to catch up, but I do think the plot in this one was weaker than the last two Hawthorne novels。 But I loved seeing Hawthorne in Anthony’s world, at the publisher and the literary festival, and I thought the setting of Alderney was very interesting。 This may not be my favorite of the Hawthorne novels, but I still wouldn’t have missed it for anything。 Egalleys for A Line to Kill were provided by HarperCollins through Edelweiss, with many thanks。 。。。more

It was okay。 Better than the second book。 Overall, it was not gripping and not much to it。 It wasn't all that clever at all。 I wouldn't say it was predictable, but the reader wasn't given much to make assumptions--which make it less engaging。 I'm glad there's a lot less re-cap of the previous books and relationships。 even with the little that was in there, I still felt it was unnecessary。 It was irrelevant to the plot。 It was okay。 Better than the second book。 Overall, it was not gripping and not much to it。 It wasn't all that clever at all。 I wouldn't say it was predictable, but the reader wasn't given much to make assumptions--which make it less engaging。 I'm glad there's a lot less re-cap of the previous books and relationships。 even with the little that was in there, I still felt it was unnecessary。 It was irrelevant to the plot。 。。。more

Another fantastic crime mystery by Mr Horowitz。 I think he’s an amazing successor to Agatha Christie and the golden age of crime。 A pure pleasure in the style of old fashioned close circuits of suspects with suspense and few red herrings in the mix。 Nice way of putting the author himself as Captain Hastings/Dr Watson and creating an engaging, easy read that flows。 I’m a fan。

E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusYes, this is more of an adult novel, but if you are a fan of Horowitz's Alex Rider books, you owe it to yourself to read his Hawthorne and Horowitz series! Me hace gracia la estructura de esta serie de libros, en la que el autor se incluye como personaje, específicamente como el escritor de estas mismas novelas en las que relata los casos de un detective que le buscó para que le acompañara como biógrafo。

I had to read the opening chapters a few times to understand how Horowitz had woven himself into one of his characters in this novel - I'm still not convinced I enjoyed this or indeed either of the characters。I was interested with the location being in Alderney which gave a suitable setting being a small island, but was also coincidentally full of eccentric and mysterious characters。 With the narrative often referring to the writing of Horowitz's book about his fictional character, and the idea I had to read the opening chapters a few times to understand how Horowitz had woven himself into one of his characters in this novel - I'm still not convinced I enjoyed this or indeed either of the characters。I was interested with the location being in Alderney which gave a suitable setting being a small island, but was also coincidentally full of eccentric and mysterious characters。 With the narrative often referring to the writing of Horowitz's book about his fictional character, and the idea of real life stories being woven into the murder mystery, I just found this book annoyingly confusing taking away any possible intrigue 。 。。。more

I have to admit I meant to read the earlier Hawthorne and Horowitz mysteries, The Word is Murder and The Sentence is Death, but I never got around to them。 If you’re like me, and just want to start with the third in the series, A Line to Kill, you’ll be just fine。 Hawthorne and Horowitz head to a small Channel island, Alderney, so it’s a fresh environment。In the mysteries, Anthony Horowitz, the narrator, is writing about Daniel Hawthorne’s investigations。 Hawthorne is a private investigator, rel I have to admit I meant to read the earlier Hawthorne and Horowitz mysteries, The Word is Murder and The Sentence is Death, but I never got around to them。 If you’re like me, and just want to start with the third in the series, A Line to Kill, you’ll be just fine。 Hawthorne and Horowitz head to a small Channel island, Alderney, so it’s a fresh environment。In the mysteries, Anthony Horowitz, the narrator, is writing about Daniel Hawthorne’s investigations。 Hawthorne is a private investigator, relieved of his duties as a detective inspector after an incident with a prisoner。 Horowitz has written the second book in the series, although it hasn’t been published yet。 Once Horowitz’ publishers meet Hawthorne, they’re eager to send the pair to a small literary festival on Alderney, a neighboring island to Guernsey。 To Horowitz’ surprise, Hawthorne is eager to attend, although Anthony knows there must be an underlying reason。There’s an eclectic mix of authors attending, including a war historian, a blind psychic, a children’s author, a celebrity chef, and a performance poet。 Horowitz is not impressed with the company, nor is he impressed with the sponsor, Charles le Mesurier。 Mesurier’s money came from his online gambling site, but now he seems to be lord of the island with a finger in every project。 The most controversial one is the Normandy-Alderney-Britain electric line project, one that has divided the community。 BAN NAB signs are all over the island。Naturally, a murder victim is found the last night of the literary festival when Mesurier holds a large party at his home。 When the Guernsey police ask Hawthorne to consult, Horowitz jumps to conclusions that the killer must be one of the small group of people he knows。 Hawthorne points out there is actually an entire island of suspects。The conflict between Hawthorne and his “Watson”, Anthony Horowitz, is actually the most entertaining aspect of the book。 Horowitz is a little bitter that Hawthorne never keeps him in the loop, and he’s always a step behind the detective。 And, Hawthorne always seems friendlier to others than he is to the man writing his story。Horowitz always plays fair with readers, and the clues are right there in front of us。 But, he’s skilled at directing our thoughts elsewhere, and the killer will come as a surprise to most readers。 Even if you haven’t read the earlier books, readers who appreciate an isolated location for the setting, and two sleuths who are not always amicable。 will enjoy this mystery。 If you read for interesting sleuths, you might want to try A Line to Kill。 。。。more

And with the island cut off, it falls to them to try and solve what turns out to be a rather convoluted crime。。。I do love this series。 Especially the quirk of having the author as one of the mail characters and the wonderful bickering and games between him and Hawthorne。 And the crimes are always a bit of a task to try and second guess。 Which I do try and do, ably assisted by Horowitz's character who gets nearly as much wrong as I do! Which is a bit bonkers given that he is writing the book! Another thing I love is the weird and wonderful characters that ably assist in the setting up, committing and solving the crime。 And in this book the author has gone all in to create some larger than life characters that just about stay on the right side of caricature! All in all, a great addition to what is shaping up to be a cracking series。 。。。more
